Tour to Machu picchu – Ollantaytambo (1D)
DESCRIPTION:
Our Local guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at around 4:00 a.m. to head to Ollantaytambo. We will arrive at about 5:45 a.m. and from there we will take a train to Aguas Calientes.
The trip from Cusco to Aguas Calientes takes about 4 hours, and there are many spectacular views along the way. Passing through lush fields and colorful villages in the foothills of the Andes, we will also go by the Urubamba River which runs through the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Our staff will be waiting for you at the train station in Aguas Calientes at 07:45 a.m. and together we will take the bus up to Machu Picchu through a zigzagging path on a 25-minute bus ride.
Once in Machu Picchu, from 09:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., our guide will have a guided tour. You will see the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Solar Clock, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and the Royal Inca Cemeteries. The guided tour lasts about 2 hours and after the tour you will have some free time to explore, take pictures, or just walk around the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. You will have the afternoon free to have lunch, visit the hot springs in Aguas Calientes or visit the small market or museum. You can have lunch in the town of Aguas Calientes, (lunch is not included in the Tour or package).
Finally, at around 06:00 p.m. you will travel by train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and then by bus to Cusco. The transfer to your hotel is at around 10:30 pm.

It boasts some very fine Inca stonework and carefully constructed terraces set in a lush and humid subtropical environment. The harmonious blending of architecture and natural topography which is so typical of Inca town planning, also known as the “Lost City of the Incas”.
Many people are surprised to learn that Machu Picchu falls into a subtropical climate category filled with orchids, bromeliads and some pesky biting insects. Also known as, many, much higher mountain peaks, frequently shrouded in mist – perhaps one of the reasons the Spanish never discovered it, surround the Cloud Forest, Machu Picchu itself.
The weather is very changeable in Machu Picchu. Typically, during the dry season (April-November) the early mornings are foggy, giving a very mystical feel and it can be a little chilly. Late morning the clouds burn off and the sun comes through, and it can get quite hot, so layers that you can peel off or add are best. Sun protection, insect repellant and a good hat are essential. However, please keep in mind that sometimes there is still rain in June and sunshine in December – Abril just be prepared. A rain poncho is also highly recommended no matter what season you come, as the weather can change very quickly.
When it rains these ancient stones can become slippery so a good tread on your shoe is helpful, and perhaps a rubber-tipped walking stick.
The most important structures at Machu Picchu are the Temple of the Sun (also called the Torreon), the Temple of Three Windows, the Temple of the Condor, and the Intihuatana Stone. The Intihuatana Stone (meaning ‘Hitching Post of the Sun’) was an astronomical observation device used to determine the precise periods for different festivals and celebrations of importance in the Inca religion.
Terraced fields on the edge of the site were once used for growing crops, likely maize and potatoes. Machu Picchu had access to springs for water and enough terraced and irrigated land to grow food.
